Some of you may be wondering after all the fuss and effort over the swim and petition what happens now?
You're right to think that, it's something I've been thinking too!
So, here's the deal, as we know it; the signatures from West Papua have been delivered to the United Nations. There are a number of checks and verifications methods being used to make sure everything is in order. That may take a few weeks to be confirmed and then will be officially announced.
The internationally run petitions on both Care2 and Avaaz will be run up until this announcement so please continue to circulate and share the petition! Every signature counts and is worth its weight in gold.
As a swim team, we hope that our actions have inspired and encouraged you. We set out to help raise awareness of the West Papua genocide and occupation in a new way. This I think we've done.
Please also remember that Yanto Awerkion is still being held in and charged with 'treason' for supporting this petition. He was arrested back on the 30th of May this year. His case is just one of many that demonstrate the brutal crack down on civil and human rights inside of West Papua under the current occupation.
Yanto, you are in our thoughts and prayers, your courage is inspiring and we hope for your realise as soon as possible.
Our news is that we are resting. The swim took over a year and a half to plan and execute, having completed this one we need some time to recover and settle.
We will continue to swim and tell the story of what we did in Switzerland.
If you're wondering what next on the swim front well, I think it's too early to say. This event certainly gives us the credibility and foot hold to move forward with another event if the opportunity arises. All any of us are thinking about now is resting and relaxing for a while.
This has been a smashing adventure on every level and we are honoured and humbled by the support shown by so many. Thank you.
We will continue to update you on the petition and what happens with it here.
I'd love to draw your attention to the Rockin' for West Papua 'Global Peace Concerts' being held all around the world in support of the West Papuan cause. Click the link above to find out more.
On a very practical note, if you're trying out open water swimming please be safe and take the necessary precautions (spotters, toe floats, hot drinks and warm clothes). Safety always comes first!
Until then, stay strong and safe!
